Europe Scoffs at U.S. Election
From an article by Anne Applebaum in Slate: "To put it bluntly, plenty of people out there are heartily sick of America the Sainted, America the Perfect, America the nation that believes everyone will sooner or later adopt American-style democracy, even if they don't yet know that they want it. No one likes to be preached at, and Americans preach. Our State Department issues annual reports, evaluating other people's human right records. Our diplomats tell the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to grant and withold funds to poor countries, depending upon the cleanliness of their elections. We send observers to other people's elections, yet would be shocked and horrified by the thought of anyone sending them to our own."

Robertson's Well Coonawarra Shiraz
I'm not much of an expert on wines, but I like to drink red wine now and then. My parents generally drink Cabernet Sauvignon. That's what I drank at first, but then moved to Merlot. Before coming to Australia I drank Chilean wine almost exclusively, but Australia has some very good brands- which I have failed to explore. I have mostly been drinking Lindemans Bin 50 1998 Shiraz and Lindemans Cawarra 1999 Merlot- both good bottles of table wine retailing at about AUD$10. But I decided to try something a little bit pricier and I got Robertson's Well Coonawarra 1998 Shiraz from the Mildara Blass winery. Fruity and very tasty.

Jimmie Davis, Louisiana's Singing Governor is Dead
"Just imagine: He served two terms as governor of Louisiana and was never indicted. That's a genuine achievement." -Former Gov. Edwin W. Edwards on former Gov. Jimmie Davis. I love reading a good obituary. If you thought all politicians were boring, read this obit from the New York Times (you have to be a registered user) of former Louisiana Governor Jimmie Davis. He wrote the song "You Are My Sunshine": You are my sunshine/ My only sunshine/ You make me happy/ When skies are gray/ You'll never know, dear,/ How much I love you/ Please don't take my sunshine away.

India Stereo
If you like Indian music, this is a very good site. It has links to radio stations playing Bollywood hits, Hindi classics, ghazals, qawali, Pakistani music, etc. I got hooked on Indian music while living in the U.A.E., but then I'm weird that way.

Win Win Campaign
Now this is interesting. Have you heard about the vote swapping plans going on? The idea is for Nader supporters in toss-up states to trade votes with Gore supporters in heavily Republican states. The logic behind it is to make sure Bush doesn't win by taking votes away from Gore in states which are still up for grabs while still securing 5% of the vote for the Green Party so as to get federal funding in 2004. I wouldn't be surprised if there's one winner of the popular vote and a different winner of the electoral vote. Maybe this will provide the impetus for getting rid of the outmoded electoral college system. Also check NaderTrader.
